Survey Report - The Current State of Skill Data in Organizations

Earlier this year (2022), Ibbaka deployed a survey to understand how leaders are gathering and using skill data in their organizations. Here, we introduce some of the findings from our report and analysis on our results.

Our main objective was to understand the types of goals that leaders have for leveraging skill data, as well as to understand methods, who is responsible for gathering and analyzing the data, what’s hard about gathering and analyzing skill data and other related issues.

 We analyzed 67 responses from a mix of operational leaders, HR professionals and senior leaders. We learned that many organizations regardless of size are taking their first steps toward gathering, aggregating and analyzing skill data. Aggregating and analyzing skill data was the most prominent challenge among our respondents. 

One possible reason for this is that most of the leaders we surveyed do not yet seem to have a system of record for skill data in their organizations. Implementing a system of record factored prominently into near-term priorities for improvement, for most organizations in our sample. 

In our conclusions from the data, we explore the implications of using skill data to improve talent mobility, data governance and ownership. One such conclusion we’ve drawn from a combination of the survey data in conjunction with interview data we’ve analyzed is that operational leaders are increasingly responsible for closing skill gaps. Because of the myriad time pressures on these frontline managers, any aggregating of skill data needs to help prioritize skill gaps for any one individual, a role, or a set of roles.
